Changeling Theory 6/8/10
In the not too ancient European/EuroAmerican practice of crossdressing boys to protect them from death, or from being replaced by a fairy changeling, one must entertain the idea that the changeling belief might well allude to a son coming out in boyhood. A homophobic family might deny that this could possibly be their actual son and instead of accepting said child, blame the fairies for changeling placement. That the child was dressed to deceive, oftentimes in beautiful flowing garments, must have felt quite comfortable before the anguish provided when choice for such clothing probably proved punishable soon after. A true conundrum. So might the origins of specific fairy nomenclature be explained by the belief that a same sex, or cross sex, child must be of the fairies and not the birth family, e.g. a fairy.
